From Complexity to Clarity:Explore Systems Thinking at ETC 2026 |
Transport systems are infrastructural, economic, technical, political and sociological. They are dynamic and complex, as well as being closely connected to other sectors such as energy, environment and health. Addressing today’s transport challenges requires moving beyond linear thinking to better understand how these systems behave and change over time, different perspectives of the systems, and where intervention points may exist. Systems Thinking offers a powerful mindset and a practical set of tools and methods that are particularly well suited to policy analysis and as a support tool for decision making. It is being increasingly adopted in transport research and planning as a complement to traditional modelling and appraisal. Whether you have experience in Systems Thinking or require an introduction to the opportunities it may offer, join us at ETC2026 in Porto for our sessions, where we will showcase a range of Systems Thinking methods applied to transport projects and research, including a hands-on workshop session. While we focus on System Dynamics, which is primarily concerned with exploring complex non-linear feedbacks (qualitative Causal Loop Diagrams and quantitative Stock Flow Models), we also introduce broader approaches, focusing on perspectives, values and foresight. Sessions are supported by the System Dynamics Society Special Interest Group in Transportation. Preliminary ProgrammeThe preliminary programme* is now available online, giving you the opportunity to explore this year's streams and sessions. You'll also find everything you need to plan your visit in the Full Booking Brochure. *The programme is subject to change. Keep up to date with conference news, speakers, social events and ETC 2026 updates by following AET on LinkedIn and visiting the AET website. |
Network with international colleaguesThe conference programme also provides ample social opportunities and technical visits for all participants to engage with transport experts from around the world, experience local transport first-hand and become part of our specialist community.
