Transport Economics, Finance and Appraisal: Rethinking What Counts
This dynamic conference stream explores the evolving economics of transport planning, investment and policy. As fiscal pressures mount and expectations for social, environmental and economic returns grow, traditional cost–benefit analysis is no longer enough. This stream brings together cutting-edge research on how we value transport—from landscape connectivity and wellbeing to emissions, congestion and digital innovation.
Papers will examine new appraisal tools for neighbourhood-scale mobility, macroeconomic pathways to net zero and the economic implications of demand-responsive rural transport. We’ll explore how reference class forecasting, asset management optimisation and digital twins are reshaping investment decisions.
Sessions will challenge assumptions about value of time, diminishing returns on infrastructure and the accuracy of legacy CBAs. From Ireland to Austria, Norway to New York, case studies will highlight the real-world impact of economic modelling on transport outcomes.
