The impact of geographical context and the built environment on perception of bikeability

This month’s TMF Webinar is being co-hosted and chaired by Dalia Zecchi (Kanton St. Gallen, CH) from the TMF Working Group, with moderation by Andre Goncalves (Sweco, Belgium), Chair of the Young Researchers’ and Practitioners’ Forum (YRPF) Programme Committee and Council Member at AET. The Neil Mansfield Award 2025 winning paper will be presented by the author Marco Baldini, PhD candidate at Politecnico di Milano, and will be followed by a guided discussion by Francesco de Fabiis, Postdoctoral Researcher at Politecnico di Milano.

The study investigates the factors influencing bikeability, defined as the perceived quality of a bicycle trip. The research uses discrete choice models (namely, Hybrid Choice Models) on revealed preference data from the Lombardy Region to identify both observable and latent constructs shaping bike trip experience. The findings reveal how perceptions of the built environment influence bikeability, offering guidance for designing sustainable urban cycling infrastructures including users' perceptions.

The AET Transport and Mobility Forum webinars are FREE to attend and are hosted on the Zoom platform.

Francesco De Fabiis is a Postdoctoral Researcher (Assistant Professor) at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Politecnico di Milano. In 2025 he obtained his Ph.D. with honours (Cum Laude) with a dissertation focused on behavioural models to assess Urban Air Mobility (UAM) services. His research investigates innovative mobility services and policies and their socio-economic impacts, with a particular focus on advanced mobility data analysis and decision-making processes in transport systems. He is the author of numerous peer-reviewed publications and acts as a reviewer for several scientific journals, including Transport Policy and Case Studies on Transport Policy (Elsevier) and the European Transport Research Review (Springer). From 2020 he has been a member of AET's Young Researchers’ and Practitioners’ Forum (YRPF). He is also a member of the EIT.
