Smart Road Assessment

Smart Roads are defined as road infrastructures for which a digital transformation process is achieved. This process aims to introduce advanced services for infrastructure managers and road users, as part of the creation of a favourable technological interoperability between infrastructures and new-generation vehicles.

With specific reference to one of the most strategic and congested motorway sections in Italy, the project aims to investigate the effects of the implementation of new functions for regulating vehicle flow, based on smart road and ITS applications: the dynamic speed control system and the dynamic lane opening/closing system.

These effects have been evaluated through evolutionary and/or alternative scenarios, both in terms of travel demand and of infrastructural configuration. According to the calculation and analysis of appropriate synthetic indicators, this approach allowed to highlight the potential benefits of the measures with reference to vehicular flow changes, expected environmental emissions and safety.

This FREE webinar is dedicated to the presentation of the winning paper of the ETC 2024 Neil Mansfield Award. It will be chaired by Dalia Zecchi, AET Ambassador for Italy, and moderated by Andre Goncalves, Chair of the Young Researchers’ and Practitioners’ Forum, featuring the following speakers:

Marco Sala, Transport Engineer, partner of NET Engineering and technical specialist in transport planning. His professional activity is mainly focused on traffic analysis based on construction of micro and macro simulation models. He also deals with urban spatial planning and feasibility studies.
Giovanni Acciaro, Technical Director at NET Engineering for Transport Planning. Giovanni has professional experience in the fields of technical and economic transport planning and regulation. He has developed a knowledge of decision support techniques in the field of private and public transport systems.
Espedito Saponaro, Partner at TRT Trasporti e Territorio. Espedito is an independent consultancy specialising in mobility and transport economics, planning, and modelling. At TRT, he coordinates feasibility studies in transport planning and modelling.
Eugenio Morello, responsible for Phoibos-Solutions Company as part of Akronos-Technologies Group, previously Technical Director of CSST s.p.a. and Director of CSST as branch of IVECO. Eugenio is an expert in traffic and transport mathematical models and has published several papers.
