Winners at ETC 2024!

We are delighted to announce that the winners of the 2024 Goudappel Award are Carlijn van der Sluijs, Lara Borst and Kobus Zantema (Municipality of Amsterdam, the Netherlands) for their paper:

“Sustainable strategies for urban infrastructure: a data-driven approach to

bridge and quay wall restoration in Amsterdam”.

The judging panel noted:

“The paper was well researched and an excellent example of using a well-established methodology in a new application. The developed and applied methodology ranks all bridges researched by the extra travel time that closing-off these bridges may impose on traffic in Amsterdam. Overall a very good paper and well-written. The jury values the very good illustrations (maps) to show how the methodology actually works. Also the paper was very well presented at the conference in Antwerp. The topic of research is relevant for other European cities as well. A large part of the European infrastructure was built between the 50’s and 70’s. This infrastructure is coming to its end of life and needs to be renewed. Restoring this infrastructure based on its old function is very costly. Reassessing the actual function of this infrastructure and optimising this, is an effective way to cope with scarce budgets. This advanced form of asset management leads therefore to significantly societal benefits.”

The jury consisted of Wim Korver (Chair), Doina Olaru, Marie José Olde Kalter, Marc Stemerding and Paulo Rui from Goudappel Group.
